iPoker rake calculation change

Rumors and speculation of a &rsquo;rake calculation method change' on the iPoker Network have been officially confirmed. <br />
From January 2nd 2010 the changes have taken place, where all rake is calculated from the contributed method as opposed to the dealt method.

So what are the differences between contributed and dealt rake?

Basically these terms concern the calculation methods of the rake you generate. The contributed rake calculation lets players get their share of the rake paid to the room only if they contributed money in the given pot, while dealt rakeback calculation means rakeback is for everyone that has been dealt cards. This means that in the later case every player being dealt cards in the hand gets credited the same amount of rake, while contributed rake calculation is proportional, so players will receive rake, depending on how much money they contribute in the pot. Dealt Rakeback tends to be more beneficial to the tight players, because even if they fold, they can still collect rake back from each hand. Whereas contributed Rakeback will only benefit the loose players as they are the ones who are the main contributors to the pot.

Change to dealt rake calculation method

For the past couple years now, numerous other poker networks and some independent poker rooms  have tended to the fashion to steer away for the dealt calculation system to the contributed i.e. (Boss, Ongame, PKR, Cereus, Entraction, Prima ) just to name a few. According to their official explanation, the main reason that lead iPoker to change their system, was to crackdown on all the illegal rakeback deals that have been plaguing the network for more than 2+ years. Their decision for change was also to prevent players from benefiting from folding on every hand in order to just  generate rakeback.

There is always going to be players who play it tight out there, either it be for the reason they want to wait for right cards, or for the fear of losing. Even though  you can find tight players at short handed tables, a majoity of them tend to congregate at full ring tables. With these latest changes, there will be a massive difference for tight players at full ring tables. The assumption is that up to 50% of their rakeback return will vanish. Once a super tight player haven (with some players sitting at an excise of 24 tables at once) will now become a real player ring.

New life at iPoker?

iPoker is basically politely sending a message to all supertight nit players , which put into words “find another poker room, this change is targeted at you”. iPoker is hopeful as supertight players tend to disappear (to find another room that still offers the dealt method) it will free up its rooms with more loose and fishy players thus increasing the pot and their winnings.

For the everyday player this new change will be a warm welcome for their gameplay. Furthermore, which iPoker fan has ever said “NO” to a better shark/fish ratio? It surely beats being at tables above NL100, full of tight regulars.

In conclusion, the system is much fairer to the players now, it sure gets the play to think, not just fold. In truth, why should you get paid equal amount of the pot for doing nothing but folding?

With this news sending shockwaves through the poker networks and on everyone’s lips, Microgaming just announced yesterday that their rake calculation method will also be changed to dealt.

But there are still several poker networks and some independent poker rooms out there that continue to offer the dealt system, they include:
PokerStars, Full Tilt, Party Poker, Everest, Cake Poker

It will be interesting to see if they will follow in the footsteps of iPoker in the future.
