SuperStar Showdown - Isildur1 Victory against Jungleman12

2011. January 31.
<em>Viktor Blom (Isildur1)</em> has won the third match of the <em>SuperStar Showdown</em> promotion with a $51,196 profit.
The hardest opponent in the SuperStar Showdown for Isildur1 has undoubtedly been one of the best NLHE heads-up players in the world, Daniel 'jungleman12' Cates. After being defeated by Isaac Haxton, then winning against Tony G, Blom had to face last year's online high stakes profit list leader.

Blom and Cates played through the 2500 hands on four $50/$100 NLHE tables, and, just as expected, we saw furious gameplay at the tables. Only a few minutes into the game, the first huge pot came, when Cates was constantly betting the {#}3 {#}6 {#}2 {#}A {#}2 board, and pushed in his whole stack on the river. Blom called everything, and ended up showing {#}A {#}K, which was enough to beat Cates' {#}A {#}Q.

A few minutes later, Cates lost another buy-in, when he went all-in with {#}Q {#}J on the {#}7 {#}5 {#}4 board. Blom called with top pair, {#}J {#}7, and neutral cards came on the next two streets.

Blom had a $19,550 profit after the first thirty minutes, but a downswing came soon enough, and Cates was already leading the 555th hand with almost $20,000. Some big hands Cates won with included his set of Nines against Blom's pocket Aces, and later won an all-in with pocket Kings against pocket Sevens.

After that, Isildur1 took his aggression to another level, and terrorised his opponent with check-raises and overbets, mostly on draw-heavy boards, which did not really work out for Cates, who followed Blom to the river several times, and then had to fold his hand.

After this, Blom also won a pot with pocket Jacks against pocket Eights, which means that the standings were almost even around the 600th hand.

Pocket Aces did not seem to bring luck for Blom, though, as he lost another $32,900 pot with them, when Cates won with {#}T {#}8 on the {#}K {#}8 {#}2 {#}8 {#}5 board (showing three of a kind, Eights).

Blom managed to catch up again, by winning a preflop all-in with pocket Queens, and took down another $20,000 pot with a straight arriving on the turn. At the end of the first half, however, Cates was leading once again by around $60,000 in profit.

Before the whole match would have become a loss for Isildur1, he managed to win $32,000 in a cooler: he showed a nut flush against Cates' second nut flush. A bit later, Blom won another all-in with a straight, which means that 500 hands before the end of the Showdown, Blom was leading once again with around $10,000. This is when it came down to the biggest pot of the match:

Pot: $54,400

Board: {#}5 {#}3 {#}4 {#}7

Blom: {#}5 {#}4
Cates: {#}8 {#}7

River: {#}8

Cates won the hand with the higher two pair.

The end of the match was dominated by Blom, including a huge pot won with {#}J {#}T on an {#}A {#}T {#}8 {#}Q {#}K, and Cates lost with a set of Queens.

In the end, Blom closed the session with $51,196 in profits.

Daniel Negreanu was a spectator of the Showdown, and also congratulated both players in the chatbox after the conclusion of the event. He then asked Blom to contact him via e-mail. It is more and more presumable, that KidPoker will be one of Blom's upcoming opponents in the SuperStar Showdown.
