After years of denial, 22 years old Bianca Rojas-Latraverse pleaded guilty this April in the charges of planning the attack on WSOP 2010 Main Event champion Jonathan Duhamel. Even though this was to be considered a mitigating circumstance, in addition to Rojas-Latraverse regretting her crime and willing to take the necessary steps to find the right path, at least according to her lawyer, local media saw a real chance of her being sentenced for life (effective 25 years according to Canadian law), as the most serious punishment available.
Rojas-Latraverse’s case was not moved forward by Judge Anne-Marie Jacques’ opinion that the defendant had failed to show regret and that she had not behaved exceptionally well during her detention of suspicion.
The jury has eventually ruled that she was to serve a considerably shorter prison time of three and a half years. With 18 months already spent in jail, Rojas-Latraverse is to remain behind bars for two more years. Meanwhile, the other two defendants have also pleaded guilty and are currently awaiting their sentence.
Duhamel got attacked on 21 December, 2011 in his home in Boucherville, Canada. Two men rang his doorbell and forced their way in when he answered. The pro got physically assaulted and robbed. Within four days, the Longueuil Police Department arrested four persons: John-Stephan Clark-Lemay, Anthony Bourque, Andre-Robert Perron and Duhamel’s ex-girlfriend, then 20-year-old Bianca Rojas-Latraverse, who was charged with being the mastermind behind the attack.
The attackers took Duhamel’s world championship bracelet, the Rolex watch he got for his victory and $115,000 in cash.
