David ‘Doc’ Sands won the $1,023,750 first prize in the World Poker Tour (WPT) Championship 2013 Super High Roller, defeating Joseph Cheoung heads-up.
Yesterday, the six-handed final table of the WPT Championship Super High Roller event was held. With a not well known name, James Courtney, on the top of the chipcount, a number of renowned pros were also seated, like Joseph Cheong, Andrew Robl and David ‘Doc’ Sands:

Seat 1: Joseph Cheong – 1,646,000 (102 bb)
Seat 2: Andrew Robl – 169,000 (10 bb)
Seat 3: James Courtney – 1,690,000 (105 bb)
Seat 4: Steven Silverman – 1,339,000 (83 bb)
Seat 5: Daniel Perper – 164,000 (10 bb)
Seat 6: David Sands – 1,286,000 (80 bb)

Even at the final table, an ITM finish was not in the pocket of the players, with only the top three finishes paying. Ultimately, it was Robl, Steven Silverman and Courtney, who left empty-handed.

On Level 19 (10,000/30,000/60,000), initial chipleader Courtney was already playing as shortstack, at least compared to chipleader Daniel Perper. In his last hand, Perper opened to 120,000 and Cheong and Courtney called. The flop came J-8-6, Perper bet 160,000, Cheong folded and Courtney check-called. On the 9 turn, he shoved with 660,000 in chips and Perper snap-called, showing J-8 for two pairs. Courtney held pocket sevens and the river came neutral.

Seat 1: Joseph Cheong – 980,000
Seat 5: Daniel Perper – 4,055,000
Seat 6: David Sands – 1,260,000

Sands went on to dominate the three-handed play and started to build his stack intensively. By Level 20 (10,000/40,000/80,000), he gained a massive edge and managed to eliminate Perper: the latter shoved with 1,170,000 on K-7, Sands re-raised all-in with pocket fives and Cheong folded. The board came 8-5-4-j-8 to give Sands a full house.
